WHAT IS THE PLANTAR FASCIA?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As you get up and move more, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after long periods of standing or after rising from sitting.

HOW DID I GET PLANTAR FASCIITIS?

Flat feet or over pronation of the arches are two of the main causes. However, any repetitive activity that overstresses this tendon can lead to plantar fasciitis (e.g. running barefoot in the sand, excess walking with flip flops/sandals or wearing high heel shoes). In addition, people who are overweight and those who wear shoes with inadequate support have an increased risk of having plantar fasciitis.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

The main goal is to loosen the reduce the inflammation of the tendon & fascia, which is what’s causing the pain. Graston therapy, Rapid Release, and therapeutic ultrasound comprise the bulk of the treatment, but other treatments such as ankle and foot Adjustments can be very helpful. Home therapy includes using ice to the bottom of the foot for 15 minutes near the end of the day, roller the tendon out with a golf ball, and working the muscles with your hand. A good foot massage can feel wonderful on those tired feet!
